FREE at Last - Black History Celebration!
2010 Speaker Series Kicks-off at Sotterley Plantation

February 6th, 2010
10am ~ 4:00 pm

SNOW DATE: Feb. 20th

Thanks to a generous grant from The Boeing Company, the 2010 Speaker Series at Sotterley will kick-off with "FREE at Last! Black History Celebration!" on Saturday, February 6th, 2010 from 10am-4pm. This free to the public event recounts the days of slavery, as well as the impact of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. There is something for all ages - dramatic portrayals, a spirit lifting gospel choir performance, hands-on learning, children's activities, and tours of the original 1830's Slave Cabin.

Sandi English will revive her character performance of "Mammy Reminiscence" at 11am in the Customs Warehouse. Having mastered the art of African-American storytelling, she and her daughter Liana English will transport guests back in time to when slaves risked all to make their way to freedom. At 1pm and 3pm, Ms. English will take on the persona of "Grandma Wisdom," who recounts the significance of the more modern-day revolution for equality to her questioning granddaughter.

Lifting their voices in soulful praise, members of the St. Peter's Claver Gospel Choir from Ridge will perform. Established in 1977, this well-known choir combines old and new age gospel, raising the spirits of all.

Education Director Carolyn Hoey will give Slave Cabin Tours featuring slave inventories, new findings from this past summer's restoration, and a hands-on exhibit of tools and household items used by the slaves.

The 2010 Speaker Series at Sotterley Plantation is sponsored by a generous grant from the Boeing Company. Committed to community support and service The Boeing Company has been dedicated to promoting education and the arts within the Southern Maryland community.

History Grows at Sotterley

When in 1993 Sotterley faced the possibility of temporarily closing to the public due to lack of funds, Elizabeth Harman and Lizette Day (both long associated with Sotterley) decided the house might close but the gardens could not be abandoned temporarily or they would fall into ruin. So they formed a Garden Guild to care for the gardens. It began with just two or three volunteers, growing each year by one or two more. We now have 40 people on our roster. Some of these folks are only able to help us out for a few hours a year but six of them each volunteered more than 200 hours last year and another eight people each volunteered more than 100 hours! GG volunteer hours for 2007 totaled 4493! (p.1)

2008 Education News and Updates

What was life like for a child over 200 years ago? The fifth grade students at Green Holly Elementary School now have a better understanding due to our Outreach Program held in January 2008. Learning is more than just what is taught in a classroom. Armed with some of the unique items used in our hands-on teaching, two Sotterley Plantation Educational Instructors introduced games of long ago, a substitute for bathing, writing with a quill pen, and the opportunity to try on 18th century clothing. Our Outreach Program allows us to share the Colonial Tidewater Plantation Life program with students that otherwise could not make it to the site. Since they cannot come to Sotterley, we take a part of history and Sotterley to them. (p.3)
