9:00 am ~ 4:00 pm

One-of-a-kind Event Blooming!
The Garden Fair at Sotterley Plantation

Years ago, Karel Čapek wrote "(Gardening) is an insatiable passion, like everything else to which a man gives his heart." And there are many hearts involved with the newest event at Sotterley Plantation!

As the colors of springtime return to the landscape, final preparations are being made for the much-anticipated 1st Annual Garden Fair at Sotterley Plantation. On April 25 & 26, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., this one-of a-kind regional event promises something for everyone. Begin the day with a Yoga or Tai Chi class in the garden and move on to learning about everything from Gardening to Beekeeping to Oyster Ranching from one of more than 30 speakers. As part of the Maryland 375 celebration, we are proud to have speakers and a scavenger hunt highlighting indigenous herbs and plants.

Holly Shimizu, Executive Director of the United States Botanic Garden is the Honorary Chair of the Garden Fair at Sotterley Plantation. Renowned presenters and Master Gardeners will share their expertise. Demonstrations and exhibits on a wide array of gardening related subjects will be on hand. Children will have the opportunity to get their hands dirty and have something special to take home for a small fee. Talented vendors will sell their wares including plants, garden accessories, decorative glass, artwork, skincare, and baskets. Tours of Sotterley Plantation's exquisite gardens and the Mansion will be offered at a reduced fee, and the Corn Crib Historic Tools Tour will also be available for free.

Admission for The Garden Fair at Sotterley Plantation is $10 for one day or $15 for a two day pass. Members pay $10 with the second day free. Children under 12 years of age are free. "MOVING MIDWAY" with GODFREY CHESHIRE
Movie and Presentation "Under the Stars"

Friday, June 12, 2009
8:00 p.m. Mansion Front Lawn

Godfrey Cheshire's richly observed film about his family's Southern plantation is a thoughtful and witty look at the lingering remnants and still-powerful mythology of plantation culture and the antebellum South. An award-winning film critic turned film maker, Cheshire uses the relocation of his family's North Carolina plantation house to embark on a surprising and multi-layered journey. A chance encounter leads Cheshire and his cousins to discover a previously unknown African-American branch of the family, the Hintons, who have their own take on Midway and its legacy.

FRED TUTMAN
Patuxent Riverkeeper
Environmental Economics & Environmental Justice

Friday, August 21, 20
7:00 p.m. in the Barn

Fred Tutman shares how our values and economic system transfer the wealth of our public rivers into private hands, leaving the public to pay the bill for the inevitable cleanups and how citizen advocates like Riverkeepers are restoring power to those most affected by profit-based pollution. With decades of clean-ups, billions of dollars and numerous compacts, treaties, agreements and accords, the Chesapeake Bay is worse than ever. The Patuxent River generally gets a "D-" on most report cards describing tributary water quality. With years of extensive involvement within the environmental field, Fred's dedication was born and nurtured here in Southern Maryland.

An Archaeology Program for Sotterley? A Panel Discussion

Sunday, September 20, 2009
3:00 p.m. in the Barn

Sotterley Plantation is rich in archaeological sites, some dating thousands of years ago, others to the period when the Mansion and Slave Cabin were occupied, and still others to the 20th century. The question arises, should these sites be excavated or are they best left untouched? Join three renowned archaeologists as they describe the archaeological research done to date at Sotterley Plantation, what this archaeology has revealed, and then debate the future of archaeology at the site. Panelists will take "sides" to emphasize the issues at stake, and the audience will be invited to weigh in with their thoughts.

History Grows at Sotterley

When in 1993 Sotterley faced the possibility of temporarily closing to the public due to lack of funds, Elizabeth Harman and Lizette Day (both long associated with Sotterley) decided the house might close but the gardens could not be abandoned temporarily or they would fall into ruin. So they formed a Garden Guild to care for the gardens. It began with just two or three volunteers, growing each year by one or two more. We now have 40 people on our roster. Some of these folks are only able to help us out for a few hours a year but six of them each volunteered more than 200 hours last year and another eight people each volunteered more than 100 hours! GG volunteer hours for 2007 totaled 4493! (p.1)

2008 Education News and Updates

What was life like for a child over 200 years ago? The fifth grade students at Green Holly Elementary School now have a better understanding due to our Outreach Program held in January 2008. Learning is more than just what is taught in a classroom. Armed with some of the unique items used in our hands-on teaching, two Sotterley Plantation Educational Instructors introduced games of long ago, a substitute for bathing, writing with a quill pen, and the opportunity to try on 18th century clothing. Our Outreach Program allows us to share the Colonial Tidewater Plantation Life program with students that otherwise could not make it to the site. Since they cannot come to Sotterley, we take a part of history and Sotterley to them. (p.3)
